Our story

AINSE was originally established in 1958 as the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering Inc. to provide universities and other tertiary institutions with a mechanism to access the unique research facilities at Lucas Heights, and to provide a focus for cooperation in nuclear science and engineering.

Today, the nuclear science and engineering at ANSTO’s Lucas Heights, Camperdown and Clayton campuses supports activities and research across a wide range of disciplines, with applications in advanced materials, agriculture, archaeology, biology, chemistry, environmental protection, geology, medicine, mining, nanotechnology, manufacturing, and physics.

AINSE Inc. developed into a new company, AINSE Ltd., which commenced trading on 1st January 2009. AINSE continues to play an indispensable role in building pathways and networks for collaboration within the nuclear science, engineering and related research fields, and building capability and diversity through training and education.

AINSE offers a range of programs and services to its members including generous conference support, inspiring symposiums, scholarships for honours and postgraduate students and early career researchers, and intensive undergraduate education schools. These benefits aim to foster scientific advancement and promote an effective collaboration between AINSE members and ANSTO.
