It was a fantastic two weeks of on-site visits for the 2026 AINSE Winter School, welcoming 57 students from more than 30 universities across Australia and New Zealand to the ANSTO Lucas Heights campus.
Following the online Winter School program held in July, students had the unique opportunity to explore ANSTO’s world-class research facilities through exclusive behind-the-scenes tours and hands-on engagement with researchers, scientists, and engineers working at the forefront of nuclear science and technology.
Participants visited a range of ANSTO facilities and research groups, including:
- Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering (ACNS)
- Centre for Accelerator Science (CAS)
- Nuclear Materials Research and Technology Group
- Environmental Radioactivity Measurement Centre
Throughout the two weeks, students connected with peers from a diverse range of STEM disciplines, building valuable professional networks while gaining insight into the many opportunities available through AINSE and ANSTO. The experience highlighted the breadth of applications of nuclear science and engineering and showcased the important role these fields play in addressing real-world challenges, including nuclear medicine, environmental monitoring initiatives, climate and environmental research, and space-related studies.
This year’s program was especially significant as AINSE celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Winter School. Reaching this milestone reflects AINSE’s ongoing commitment to developing the next generation of STEM professionals and strengthening Australia’s and New Zealand’s nuclear science and engineering workforce.
To mark the occasion, students joined a special anniversary celebration that included a networking evening, and a social activity designed to foster new connections and celebrate three decades of the program’s success. As a memento of this milestone year, participants received exclusive 30th anniversary pins and commemorative Winter School hoodies.
For 30 years, the AINSE Winter School has provided students with unparalleled access to cutting-edge research facilities, industry experts, and career development opportunities. The 2026 program continued this proud tradition, inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators to explore careers in nuclear science and related fields.
