ISO 14001 Compliance
Managing ANSTO's ISO 14001 environmental management accreditation is a challenge that requires continuous improvement in environmental performance.
For ANSTO this involves moving beyond measuring radioactive releases and looking at some other environmental aspects.
Environmental Commitments
- Ensure there is no significant radiological impact on the environment as a consequence of ANSTO's operations
- Continually improve ANSTO's environmental management system
- Raise levels of environmental responsibility throughout the organisation
- Minimise the use of water, energy and other resources
ANSTO's Environmental Management System
What It Does
Global, national & local environmental issues. Our environmental issues.
Why We Need It
- Reduce our environmental footprint.
- Provide leadership.
- Government Policy.
How We Are Going To Control It
Environmental Management System - ISO 14001.
Our EMS
An EMS is part of the overall management system that includes organisational structure, planning activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources for developing, implementing, achieving, reviewing and maintaining the environmental policy AS ISO 14050:1999
An EMS is a structured tool for measuring and continually improving the performance of an organisation in maintaining its regulatory compliance and managing its environmental risk.
Environmental Issues
- Climate Change
- Resource Use
- Land & Water
- Degradation
- Waste Production
- Biodiversity
- Loss
Key ANSTO Environmental Issues
- Resource Use
- Discharges to Water
- Discharges to Air
- Hazardous materials
- Waste Generation
Benefits of Environmental Management to ANSTO
- Reduction of our environmental footprint
- Savings through:
- Reducing our use of energy
- Reducing our use of materials
- Producing less waste
- Allocating resources more efficiently
- We should practice what we preach?
- We can provide a role model for others to follow
Our Objectives
ANSTO will undertake its activities in a manner that:
- Places the protection of human health and safety and the environment, as its highest priority
- Promotes a positive safety culture and environmental awareness throughout all levels of the organisation
- Strives for continual improvement in safe work practices, reducing environmental impact and the prevention of pollution
Ensuring our EMS is effective

Our EMS is supported by
- ANSTO's Health, Safety & Environment Policy
- The Environmental Management Committee
- Documented processes
These complement and form part of the EMS
What is in ANSTO's EMS
ANSTO's Environmental Management System has been designed to satisfy the requirements of ISO 14001
Many of the EMS components are common with the ABMS (Quality) processes.
EMS specific processes are associated with
- Environmental Risk Management
- Compliance Management
Risk Management
Environmental Risk Management is undertaken by:
- Identifying the Environmental Aspects
- Recording the Environmental Aspects
- Determining the impact (ie risk) of the Aspect
- Assessing the significance of the Aspect
This information is used in the Planning Process .
- Identifying Legal, Regulatory & other requirements
- Recording these requirements
This information is used in the Planning Process.
Note that there is no risk assessment.
These requirements must be met.
We must demonstrate compliance with these requirements.
Planning for Environmental Management
Information gathered is used to:
- Set Environmental Objectives & Targets
- Develop Environmental Management Plans
- Devise Environmental Action Plans
Which are then subject to performance monitoring, audit and review.
Continual Improvement
In common with all management systems, the Environmental Management System standard aims at continually improving performance.
This is a fundamental characteristic of the ISO 14001 standard.
What we have achieved so far
- Environmental Management System certified to ISO 14001
- Energy Savings
- Reduced Material Use
- Reduced Waste
- Established baselines
Our environmental goals for the future
- EMS: Maintain our ISO 14001 certification
- Energy: Optimise the performance of energy consuming processes
- Waste: Develop strategies to minimise waste generation.
- Water: Investigate options to improve water monitoring accuracy and to investigate conservation strategies
- Emissions: Monitor and minimise impact on environment
