What is happening at the moment with decisions on storing radioactive waste?

The responsibility for Commonwealth waste (such as ANSTO's) is that of the Federal Government, while individual States are responsible for their own waste.  Federally, planning for the storage of Commonwealth waste is the responsibility of the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST).  The Australian Government has announced it will site a facility in the Northern Territory for management of all Australian Government radioactive waste, and legislation to facilitate that has been passed by the Parliament.  More information can be found on the DEST website.
