AINSE Honours Scholarships

Applications from 31 students were examined by the Executive Committee and it was agreed to award 12 scholarships to the following students – Andrew Buckley (CUR), Mark Ferrara (UWS), Alissa Hackett (AKL), Oleg Koudeshev (ANU), Dayna McGeeney (NSW), Stephen Pert (NSW), Heather Nutt (QLD), Adriana Sanchez (MUR) Kristian Tangso (MON) Matt Thompson (CQU) Timothy Webb (GRI), and Nikita Tully (USC). Selection of the students was based on their undergraduate academic record.

The students selected come from five states and NZ, including one of AINSE’s newest members - the University of the Sunshine Coast, and five of the twelve honours scholars are female. Eight of the applicants attended the AINSE Winter School in 2010 and three of these were selected for an Honours Scholarship.

AINSE congratulates the students selected and wishes them luck with their endeavours.

AINSE Research Projects

AINSE has incorporated the two programs which were previously listed on the Australian Competitive Grants Register (ACGR), Research Awards for Academics and Research Fellowships. This amalgamated program has been accepted by DIISR for listing in Category 1 on the ACGR. The amalgamated program will have two rounds each year. The round to close on 31 May will be for Research Fellowship applicants. The second round, to close on 15 September, will be for other Academics wishing to gain access to the research facilities at ANSTO and will not include Research Fellowship applicants. 3rd AONSA Neutron School

4-9 October 2010 Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Trombay, Mumbai, India

AINSE Postgraduate Research awards 2010

AINSE has announced 21 new scholarships for 2010. AINSE currently supports 77 Post Graduation Research Award (PGRA) scholars as part of its remit to support education and training in nuclear science and engineering. Two young career researchers, Dr Manickam Minakshi and Dr Madhu Bhaskaran supported by AINSE, were successful in the recent ARC Discovery Project round.

AINSE congratulates E/Professor Bob Breakspere who was awarded an OAM in the 2010 Australia Day Honours. Bob was AINSE President in 1995 and 1996.

AINSE Awards an Honorary Fellowship to Professor John White, Australian National University
AINSE Honorary Fellowships are awarded by the AINSE Council to individuals for distinguished and dedicated services to AINSE. Professor John White, CMG MSc Sydney MA DPhil Oxford, FRSC, FRACI, FAPS, FAA, FRS, is an outstanding Australian scientist and has given years of service to AINSE. Professor White was presented with his Honorary Fellowship by AINSE President, Professor Allan Chivas at the AINSE Council Seminar on 10 December.

AINSE Scholar attends Lindau 2009
David Jacques, an AINSE postgraduate research award holder, attended the prestigious 2009 Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Germany.

Vale Eric Hall
Eric Hall, who received his first AINSE Research Award in 1961, made a valued contribution to AINSE over many years as Councillor, Vice-President and President. Eric died 29 July, 2009, aged 83, after a long illness.

John Ferris Scholarship
John Dawson of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at James Cook University, Townsville - has won a $15,000 top-up to his PhD scholarship to use radiocarbon dating tools to understand the impacts of climate change on reef islands.

The scholarship, which commenced on 1 July 2009, is administered by AINSE Ltd and means that John can travel to use sophisticated accelerator facilities at ANSTO. It is called the John Ferris Memorial Scholarship.

AINSE Gold Medal for Postgraduate Student Awarded
On 16 June 2009 Dr Dennis Mather, AINSE Managing Director presented a student Gold Medal to Dr Paul Saines who is currenty undertaking Post Doctorate studies at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, University of Cambridge, Cambridge UK. The award was presented at a ceremony at ISIS, the pulsed neutron and muon source located at the UK Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford. ISIS Director, Dr Andrew Taylor attended the presentation.
