Our science & technology

For 50 years ANSTO has undertaken research in nuclear science and technology with applications which assist in solving problems in such diverse areas as environment, climate change, human health, agriculture, manufacturing, mining, construction, minerals, structural integrity, and nuclear proliferation.

microbiology

The main areas of scientific focus are on:

  • developing nuclear medicines for better diagnosis and treatment of disease
  • using natural isotopes to map processes in the environment and climate change
  • understanding the movement of ground water and pollution in the air and oceans
  • using our particle accelerator facilities to carbon date artefacts for history, understand climate change, and conduct nuclear forensics
  • developing advanced materials for high-tech industry applications as well as for everyday life
  • managing waste water and pollution
  • devising better ways of measuring the impact of radiation on our bodies and how radiation is measured and detected
  • researching ways to continually improve the management of radioactive waste
  • using neutron scattering and X-ray scientific research to understand the atomic structure of organic and biological material

These scientific projects are managed by ANSTO's research institutes and more details can be found by looking at these sites:
