Chris Ling joined ANSTO in June 2004 in a joint position with the Chemistry Department of the University of Sydney, under the auspices of the Centre for Structural Biology and Structural Chemistry. He completed his PhD in 1999 at the Research School of Chemistry of the Australian National University, focussing on solid-state chemistry and crystallography. Significant use of neutron and synchrotron techniques during his PhD led to a two-year postdoctoral position in the Materials Science Division of Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago, USA, where he made good use of the on-site spallation neutron source IPNS and synchrotron source APS and developed an interest in magnetic materials. From there he moved to the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France, working as an instrument scientist at the world's most intense neutron source, while continuing to pursue research projects in solid-state and materials science. After three years at the ILL he returned to Australia to take up his present position.
He is the author or co-author of 30 refereed scientific papers as well as a book chapter, and has presented talks at half a dozen international conferences.
