Dr Anton Stampfl is a solid-state physicist who has worked in the field of photoemission spectroscopy since 1983 and synchrotron radiation science and instrumentation since 1987. He has a PhD in Physics from LaTrobe University and has previously worked at the Fritz-Haber-Institut of the Max-Planck-Society in Berlin, the Freie Universitat in Berlin, as well as working at the synchrotron light sources, BESSY, SRS (Daresbury) and the Advanced Photon Source. He has two research programs. One centres on how the electronic structure of surfaces and interfaces are related to their material properties and focuses on ways of measuring these relationships. The other centres on investigating real-world samples, such as biological, geological and environmental material using fluorescence based techniques.
Anton has published over 70 papers related to his synchrotron and photoemission work. Since 1998, he has successfully helped with approximately 100 Australian funded experiments at the Advanced Photon Source. Anton returned to Australia in March 2003 to take the position of ASRP spokesperson for experiments at the Taiwanese synchrotron, NSRRC. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Chemistry at the University of Sydney.
