Dennis came to AINSE with broad experience in working with Industry Training Advisory Bodies (ITABs), the Plastics Industry Association, ICI (Australia) and the NSW Department of Education.

Dennis gained his Ph D at the University of New South Wales with a thesis entitled Anomalous magnetic properties of six coordinate iron(II) and cobalt(II) complexes derived from 1, 10-phenanthroline. He then completed his Dip Ed at Sydney Teachers College.

After about 12 years teaching chemistry and other science subjects in inner metropolitan Sydney high schools he was seconded to work for what is now the Board of Studies, where he coordinated the setting of HSC examinations for two years.

His next post involved a complete change - he became an account manager with ICI and began selling polyethylene-based resins to manufacturers in NSW.

After about two years Dennis took up a new post managing the industry groups for the Plastics Industry Association. This involved moving to a Melbourne-based office while maintaining contact with people from manufacturing enterprises and government across the country. The groups are active in many areas including standards maintenance, public image, regulatory requirements.

His next position was as executive officer for the NSW Chemical and Oil Industry Training Advisory Committee and then the NSW Process Manufacturing ITAB. During his final year with the ITABs he was seconded to the National Process Manufacturing ITAB where he managed the development of the National Training Package for the chemical, oil refining and hydrocarbons industries.

Dennis joined AINSE in March 1998 following the retirement of Dr Roger Gammon.
