Conference Medal Winner

Rob_Hayes_Smaller

AINSE provided travel assistance for Robert Hayes, of the University of Newcastle, to attend the 27th Australian Colloid and Surface Science Student Conference, (1- 5 February 2010, South Australia). His presentation was based on work completed in his honours year, which used neutron diffraction to elucidate the bulk structure of two ionic liquids, ethylammonium nitrate and ethanolammonium nitrate. He was awarded the Healy-Hunter Medal for best oral presentation.

Robert has commenced his PhD studies at the University of Newcastle in March 2010 under the supervision of Dr Rob Atkin. He is using neutron diffraction to examine the bulk structure of ionic liquids, and relates this to the interfacial structure, which is probed using atomic force microscopy. Robert says 'I am applying for an AINSE PGRA scholarship which will give me additional income and a closer relationship with the staff at the Bragg Institute'.
