The materials and engineering science staff at ANSTO have research expertise in ceramics, polymers, thin films and sol-gel chemistry for new material development, material optimisation and ceramic wasteforms. We have specialised facilities and highly qualified staff in materials processing, development and characterisation to assist industry solve complex materials problems.

Materials Characterisation

ANSTO has a wide range of materials characterisation tools available including: Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) (ANTARES, STAR), Ion Implantation, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Rutherford Back Scattering (RBS), Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), neutron and x-ray reflectometry, scanning laser dilatometry, impedance spectroscopy, ultrasound spectroscopy and isothermal calorimetry, ellipsometry, Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS), Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS), vibrational spectroscopy, thermal analysis, mercury intrusion porosimetry.
