The Australian National Beamline Facility - Access Information and Forms

Beamtime at the ANBF can now be obtained in two ways:

  • Single Experiment Proposals for a single beamtime allocation.
  • Program Proposals for a one or two year experimental program.

Program Proposals are accepted once a year only, at the June proposal deadline. Both require submission of a scientific proposal that is peer reviewed by external reviewers and the ASRP Photon Factory Specialist Committee. Additional details on both forms of proposal can be found below.

Current Deadlines:

The deadline for Single Experiment proposals is Monday 29 January 2007
Program proposals are not being accepted in this round.

This deadline is for single experiment proposals seeking beamtime allocations in the April - June, 2007 operations cycle. The Photon Factory operating schedule can be viewed at http://pfwww.kek.jp/unten/titlee.html

ANBF Proposal Forms

A common form is used for both Single Experiment and Program Proposals. Proposal and information packages are available from the ASRP office or can be downloaded here:

Note that the application forms have been revised ? the old forms will not be accepted.

Single Experiment Proposal

This has been the normal access mechanism to the ANBF in the past, and remains essentially unchanged. A single experiment proposal is active for the given, single PF operating cycle and requires 1-6 days of beamtime. Please note however we have redesigned the proposal form. The old form will not be accepted as of the coming October - December 2003 operating cycle. The new form can be downloaded above.

Program Proposals

A program proposal comprises a series of linked experiments, ie it should be a coherent research program and not a string of individual "stand alone" experiments. Program proposals will typically have a 1 or 2 year life, with a maximum beamtime request of 6 days per Photon Factory operating cycle. Program Proposals can be renewed for a second year subject to review.

Program Proposals are intended for established and experienced ANBF users. Eligibility criteria include a quality publication portfolio and a proven track record at the ANBF with a minimum of three visits within the last three years. Additional considerations include external funding and graduate student participation (where applicable). Program Proposals will first be vetted at the ASRP Office to ensure eligibility criteria are satisfied prior to going to reviewers. Where possible, both domestic and international reviewers will be utilised.

Program Proposal applicants must state both their desired beamtime for each cycle of the program, and the minimum acceptable number of days required each cycle. (This should be done in section II of the proposal). Successful applicants will be guaranteed their stated minimum beamtime. Prior to scheduling each PF operating cycle, successful Program Proposal applicants will submit a request for funding, a beamtime allocation request and a report from their previous visit.

Proposals should be forwarded to the ASRP office. A signed hardcopy is essential. Users are also encouraged to submit electronically in parallel. An electronic submission (via email) is acceptable by the deadline.

ANBF Powder Sample Data Collection Service

This service offers room temperature powder diffraction data collection from small numbers of samples. Click here for further details and the relevant forms.

Other Beamlines at the Photon Factory

Proposals for beamtime on any Photon Factory beamline other than the ANBF or beamline 8A should be lodged with the Photon Factory. The proposal must be discussed with the Photon Factory member responsible for the beamline prior to submission. Proposal forms and an information pack is available from the ASRP office.

Please forward a copy of your Photon Factory proposal to the ASRP office (address above) when you submit to the Photon Factory. When beamtime is allocated, ASRP funding for the experiment can be requested.

Acknowledgment

Any publication resulting from the use of the ANBF must be acknowledged using the paragraph below:

This work was performed at the Australian National Beamline Facility with support from the Australian Synchrotron Research Program, which is funded by the Commonwealth of Australia under the Major National Research Facilities Program.

One copy of each published manuscript should be sent to the ASRP administration office as soon as possible after the publication date.

In addition, please ensure that the ASRP, and the use of Synchrotron Radiation, is acknowledged in any press release resulting from ASRP supported research. This is very important to ensure the continued funding and growth of the synchrotron program in Australia.
