DEST logoAccess to Major Research Facilities Programme (AMRFP)

The Access to Major Research Facilities Programme (AMRFP) supports access by Australian researchers from industry, private and public research organisations and universities to major international research facilities not available in Australia or to attend overseas strategic planning meetings to secure access to a major research facility.

AMRFP is administered by ANSTO and is proudly supported by the International Science Linkages (ISL) programme, which is a part of Government's Innovation Statement: Backing Australia's Ability - Building Our Future through Science and Innovation.

AMRFP support is limited to the facilities listed in the linked table. Note that access to synchrotron beamlines at the Photon Factory, Japan, Taiwan (NSRRC) and to BioCARS, ChemMatCARS and XOR-CAT at the Advanced Photon Source, USA, is provided by the Australian Synchrotron Research Program.

Please note the primary purpose of the programme is to support travel where time has been granted on an overseas major facility following a peer reviewed process. Collaboration visits will not be supported unless time has already been granted at an eligible facility. Further information on the support available under the different elements of the Government?s International Science Linkages Programme can be obtained at

Funding Rounds and Access Mechanisms

AMRF Programme operates two 6 month funding rounds (Jan-Jun and Jul-Dec) per year using the two following access mechanisms:

AM-1: Applications that meet the application conditions are approved and funded in chronological order of receipt until a set portion of the funds for a funding round have been committed. Approximately 5/6 of the total funds for a round are devoted to AM-1.

AM-2: Applications that meet the application conditions (including funding) that are received after the funds for the funding round (AM-1) have been committed, are ranked and approved at the end of the funding round until the total remaining funds for the funding round and unused funds from previous rounds are committed (1st May for Jan-Jun and 1st Nov for Jul-Dec). Approximately 1/6 of the total funds for a round are devoted to AM-2. Applications are ranked according to the following criteria:

    1. Applications that form a critical part of a graduate thesis
    2. Applications from Early Career Researchers (ECRs)
    3. Applicants that did not apply for funding in previous funding round.
    4. Chronological receipt date of application.

Reporting Requirements

Two reports are required for each funded trip. The objective of the 30 day report is to gather statistics to demonstrate that the programme is contributing to the objectives of the International Science Linkages Programme. The 12 month report is a scientific experimental report.

The reports must be electronically submitted, and the forms can be downloaded here:

  1. 30 day report. To be submitted within 30 days of the conclusion of the funded travel. Download (Word)
  2. 12 month report. To be submitted 1 year after the funded travel. Download (Word)
